A month back, i went to buy green vegetables and fruits at our usual roadside market stall and found myself into business Lugambo (random talk) with the woman seller.
Being a Consultant and Entrepreneur , i watch a lot of things every time i come across a business regardless of size. I was surprised of increased prices on vegetables, the bundle has decreased somehow and I was prompted to sit with her down to know the up & downside of such a micro business. It had not come to my mind that in sunny season vegetable prices rise.
Mehn! , So insightful. You may think running such a micro trade business is a walk on just but there is much that goes into its success; the logistics, planning, storage, partners, financial management, records, etc. Getting and idea in business is one thing and putting it to work is another.
I was touched to find that she have had difficulty in record keeping and money management and together in a few minutes we established a better way to keep her records and track income and expenditure and account for loss and profits each ending day, so as also to have monthly accounts of how she performed in profit or loss. You don’t know the joy she had. “Mutabani (son), you have opened my eyes” – she said.
When we support such micro businesses to do business better and expand, we are building communities and livelihood income. I just like that. Running a micro business can be a mixed experience. It sometimes feels lonely given the way people take these sellers. It’s lonely in the sense that no one gives you a chance to hack growth, it’s challenging that it feeds the family directly before accounting for profits, etc.
We passed through all these hacks and the smile on her face beamed so bright that i would feel the universe gratefully pinching my back.
Every person in business has to deal with a unique set of circumstances and factors that are specific to their business growth and some don’t know them, it’s our duty to share knowledge and Impact others. Regardless of your work, you have knowledge that can help these family support businesses. Don’t just buy, make friends and share some insights every time you park to buy.
Financial basics
As i earlier highlighted the key challenges of such micro businesses as failure to account for expenditures since most owners spend at hand for their personal and family needs, it is important to see how that can be managed. Managing your money is more than just knowing how much you have sold a specific day, its beyond knowing what is in your business purse or drawer or bank account. Proper recording keeping is vital because it helps you understand the financial state and cash flow of your business, it is the thermometer the measures and tell the temperature at which your business is running on.Â
Have the right shoes for the terrain
Every journey of a thousand miles starts with one step, so goes an old adage. Keeping up a micro/small business (even other big businesses) involves making a lot of choices and changes and this takes courage. So, have the right shoes to keep going. Have the attitude of resilience. it determines how far you can go. Nobody knows everything. Learn, collaborate, share. Always get feedback from your customers. Always listen to your customers to refine your selling, packaging, delivery, purchase process and choices. Pay great attention to details.
We can all rise give such understanding of business! The success of every business is always up to the owner!
