Some one (one of my mentees) gave me a call some time back and part of her reasons for calling was to understand sure if the challenges are normal to have in life. That’s her frustration. Cut from a well off family and having grown with a silver plate of servings, now facing the world on her adult own, challenges seem something abnormal.   Just like her , all other people including me and you have challenges , they may differ in size and weight , time and area of life but the truth is challenges and obstacles are inevitable in human life. Show me a man who never had struggles and challenges and i show you are man who never lived.

At my 3.4 decades of living I am glad (can’t complain) that I have been in a full bunch of challenges , most of which have been rewarding .   See,   Calm seas will never make skilled sailors .  It is through challenges that great men and ideas are born , it is through challenges that experiences are got, etc.  No ceramic will get to shine without it’s clay being crushed and put to heat .

As i narrate in my book, Winning By Choice, i once got a chance to talk to a Lebanon sailor and he told me sailors manage to keep the boat afloat of water through a technique called tacking .. They evidently know the waters will not be calm and even the obstacles are many , they take the ship in a zig zag route , identifying obstacles and switching a new temporary direction to avoid any obstacle detected but not taking eyes from the final destination.  You are also a sailor and you only reach your destiny through tacking .

I am glad that at my age I have tasted many recipes of challenges, I have loved and been loved and on the other side several times I have been rejected and dumped ,  I have made a chunk of money and lost it , regained it etc.   I have seen businesses slip off my hands and I have built some . I have been told of things I cannot accomplish and at times I have found myself accomplish them.  What am trying to say is that all these are experiences which add up to form the skilled sailor i am.  How you deal and respond to challenges determine what kind of sailor you become.   I have never had of a calm sea that lives with no storms 365 days. Calm seas never make skilled sailors.  

I am not saying its normal to have repetitive challenges but that its normal to develop a defined mapping to reach your destiny full of obstacles.  Life is a journey without a defined map,  you have got to draw your own maps day by day and this comes with some friction conventionally called challenges. So live,  Love and be glad because it rained,  it’s by rain that we learn the use of the umbrella, appreciate that lesson and press on.   

Just because it’s dark in one side of your life,  it doesn’t mean not to see the side were it is shining . Embrace the challenges and soar.  Calm seas never make skilled sailors.  Skilled sailors reach greater horizons.
